The Fat Lady is the woman pictured on the portrait guarding Gryffindor Tower. She will only open the passage concealed behind her portrait to those who know the password, which changes regularly. She has been known to leave her portrait, especially at night, leaving student stranded in the hallway. The name of the witch she was painted after is unknown, as are any other details about her. However, it is likely that she was a Gryffindor.

From the Story

"The portrait of the Fat Lady guards the entrance to Gryffindor Tower. She lets students enter the common room – via a round hole in the wall – when they present the correct password."

Discovered in Book 1, Chapter 7, The Sorting Hat

"A portrait of a very large woman in a pink silk dress, the Fat Lady guards the entrance to Gryffindor Tower. She asks Percy for the password, Caput Draconis, before letting him lead the first-year Gryffindor students into the common room."

Discovered in Book 4, Chapter 17, The Four Champions

"The Fat Lady has been joined in her portrait by her friend Violet when Harry appears at the Gryffindor common room entrance. She looks at Harry with interest, intrigued by his appointment as Triwizard champion. She lets Harry into the common room after he gives the password, 'Balderdash' immediately after her questioning, soothing an insulted Violet as she swings forward."
