Pigwidgeon arrives in Harry's room with a note from Ron. He zooms around the room after dropping the letter at Harry's feet, twittering with pride at having delivered his letter. He is full of excitement as Harry secures a reply to his leg, and speeds out of the window to deliver the note to Ron.
Pigwidgeon was named by Ginny Weasley, and refuses to answer to anything else, much to Ron's dismay. Ron tells Harry that "Pig" has to stay in his room, as he annoys Errol and Hermes, the Weasleys' other owls.
Pig begins twittering and zooming around his cage when Harry and Ron enter Ron's bedroom, the sight of their half-packed trucks seeming to have sent him into a frenzy of excitement. After Mrs Weasley leaves the room, he makes a funny spluttering noise, choking on an overlarge Owl Treat; his beak has to be unstuck by Ron.
Pigwidgeon is so over-excited at the idea of a delivery he flies round and round Harry's head, hooting incessantly. He has to be held still by Ron as Harry affixes the letter to his leg. When Ron throws Pig out of the window of the Owlery, he plummets twelve feet before managing to pull himself back up again, the weight of the letter much greater than usual. He disappears into the darkness, on his way to find Sirius.
Pigwidgeon appears at the top of the marble staircase in the Entrance Hall carrying a letter from Sirius. He twitters madly on top of the icicle-laden bannisters, enjoying the attention he is getting from other students. He hoots happily when Ron snatches him up, his head protruding over Ron's fist. The tiny owl hoots happily as he soars through the air when Ron starts to wave his fist at the assembled students.
Pigwidgeon is sent by Harry to deliver food to Sirius and Buckbeak in the cave near Hogsmeade, where they are hiding. He is much too small to carry an entire ham up the mountain by himself, and is assisted by two screech owls.
Pigwidgeon is not allowed out every night to hunt, as Professor Dumbledore doesn't want to draw attention to number twelve, Grimmauld Place by having owls swooping around the square. Pig clatters around the top of the wardrobe in Harry and Ron's bedroom, rustling his wings restlessly.
