Discovered in chapter 20, The First Task

The golden eggs are placed within the pile of dragon eggs protected by the female nesting dragons during the first task. Ludo Bagman informs the champions that the golden eggs contain the key to the second task of the Tournament; the eggs have hinges which allow them to open to reveal the clue.

Discovered in chapter 21, The House-Elf Liberation Front

Harry is able to open the golden egg by digging his fingers into the groove that runs all the way around it. When the egg is opened, a horrible screeching noise, a loud wailing, fills the room.

Discovered in chapter 24, Rita Skeeter's Scoop

No matter how hard Harry tries, the sound the egg makes does not change. Nothing happens to the egg when Harry asks it questions over the wailing noise, nor when he throws it across the room.

Discovered in chapter 25, The Egg and the Eye

When opened underwater, with Harry's head submerged as well, the screeching sound made by the egg is revealed to be a song. A chorus of eerie voices sing to Harry from the open egg:

‘Come seek us where our voices sound,
We cannot sing above the ground,
And while you’re searching, ponder this:
We’ve taken what you’ll sorely miss,
An hour long you’ll have to look,
And to recover what we took,
But past an hour – the prospect’s black
Too late, it’s gone, it won’t come back.’
