From the Story[]

Discovered in Book 6, Chapter 9, Felix Felicis[]

Professor Slughorn is the Potions teacher at Hogwarts during Harry's sixth year. He greets Harry and Blaise Zabini with particular enthusiasm in his first lesson with the sixth-year Potions students. Slughorn lends Harry and Ron spare copies of the textbook Advanced Potion Making for the lesson as they were unaware they would be taking the class, and lends them ingredients from the store cupboard.

Slughorn shows the class various potions he has prepared for them to look at, including Veritaserum, Polyjuice Potion, Amortentia and Felix Felicis. He is impressed when Hermione is able to tell him what each of the potions are, and beams when she tells him she is a Muggle-born, recognising her as the talented friend Harry mentioned to him. He explains the properties of each of the potions to the class, and tells them that he will be offering a small vial of Felix Felicis to the student who creates the best Draught of Living Death by the end of the lesson.

Slughorn is thrilled when Harry produces the best potion in the class, thinking that the boy has inherited his mother's talent for potion making, and gives him the Felix Felicis.

Discovered in Book 6, Chapter 15, The Unbreakable Vow[]

Slughorn greets Harry happily almost as soon as he enters the room. He is dressed in a tasselled velvet hat which matches his smoking jacket. He leads Harry purposefully into the party and introduces him to several guests. Slughorn later interrupts Harry's conversation with Professor Trelawney, and begins to praise Harry's abilities in his Potions lessons. He encourages Professor Snape to join their conversation, giving credit to his colleague for Harry's proficiency in the subject. He tells Snape that Harry's skills could even surpass Snape's.

Slughorn is surprised when Filch arrives with Draco Malfoy in tow, who claims to have been trying to gatecrash the party. He allows the student to stay in the spirit of the season.
