The Shrieking Shack is an abandoned house on the outskirts of the village of Hogsmeade.

When Remus Lupin was a student at Hogwarts, he was brought the Shrieking Shack to transform into a werewolf in secret each month. The noises made by the werewolf lead the residents of Hogsmeade to believe that the shack was haunted.

The Shrieking Shack is the most haunted dwelling in Britain.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Discovered in chapter 14, Snape's Grudge

The Shrieking Shack is the most haunted dwelling in Britain; a slightly creepy building even in daylight, with boarded up windows and an overgrown garden. It is located on a hill above Hogsmeade. Rumour has it that a rough crowd live in the Shack, and even the Hogwarts ghosts avoid it.

Discovered in chapter 17, Cat, Rat and Dog

The Shrieking Shack can be accessed via the tunnel leading from the Whomping Willow. The passage leads into a shabby room on the ground floor of the Shack. Paint peels from the walls, there are stains on the floors, and all the furniture has been destroyed. There is a crumbling staircase to the upper floor of the Shrieking Shack, leading to several more rooms. A magnificent, if somewhat dusty, four-poster bed stands in the middle of one of these rooms.

Discovered in chapter 18, Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs

The Shrieking Shack was built as part of the precautions set in place whilst Remus Lupin was at Hogwarts. Lupin used the Shack for his transformations into a werewolf during the full moon: it was he who made the terrible noises that were rumoured to be violent spirits. The rumours were encouraged to the extent that, even now, no one dares approach the Shrieking Shack.
