Discovered in chapter 28, The Madness of Mr Crouch

Ludo Bagman reveals the details of the third task in the last week of May, one month before the task is to happen. A maze is being grown by Hagrid on the Hogwarts Quidditch pitch, which will have hedge walls twenty feet tall. Bagman tells the champions that there will be several magical obstacles within the maze to hinder their search for the Triwizard Cup, which is to be placed in the centre of the maze. The first champion to touch the Triwizard Cup will receive full marks for the task. The champions will enter the maze in points order: Harry and Cedric will enter the maze first, followed by Viktor Krum, and finally Fleur Delacour.

Discovered in chapter 31, The Third Task

The maze grown for the third task is twenty feet high, and runs all around the edge of the Quidditch pitch. Hagrid, Professor Moody, Professor McGonagall and Professor Flitwick patrol the outside of the maze during the task, ready to help if any of the champions get into difficulty and wish to be rescued. The obstacles concealed in the maze include a Sphinx, a Boggart, enlarged Blast-Ended Skrewts, a mysterious golden mist and a gigantic spider.
